Hamilton lost his pole position from the off as Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas overtook him at Turn One.
The Brit then pitted earlier than planned because third-placed Sebastian Vettel took an early roll of the dice.
However, the five-time world champion continued to lose ground on Bottas and he questioned his team’s decision over the radio.
“What’s the reason we stopped so early?” the Brit asked.
“To cover Vettel,” was the reply.
Hamilton then raised concerns that he may have to abandon a one-stop strategy, which could ultimately cost him a podium place.
“I don’t think I’m going to make it to the end of this race with this tyre,” a concerned Hamilton said.
And Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle pointed out how unhappy the 33-year old was.
“Lewis isn’t having a very happy day out there, is he?” he commented.
Mercedes were miles quicker than their Ferrari rivals in the build-up to the race.
And Hamilton was surprised to see his team so far ahead.
“I really wasn’t expecting to see the performance difference,” said Hamilton.
“It is a real shock.
“We really had no idea that we would have this performance.
“We thought we would be behind.”
