Manchester United are still working on trying to get a £15million deal over the line to bring the exciting Swansea and Wales international to Old Trafford.

And while Solskjaer refused to comment on rumours about individual targets, he admitted he is not looking for ‘ready made’ solutions to the problems at the club.

“I can’t comment on every single individual. There are many players as I’ve said. I don’t like it when other managers talk about my players and I wouldn’t talk about any others, even if I was or wasn’t interested,” he said.

Asked whether he was interested in signing players with potential rather than proven form at the highest levels, Solskjaer was clear.

“I think I’ve been quite honest that challenging for the title next year would be a miraculous season because we’re so far behind at the moment points wise,” he said.

“And yes next season we’ve got to close that gap. But this summer will also be about players who can last here for many years.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been a ready made club – [Cristiano] Ronaldo was not ready made, [Wayne] Rooney was not ready made.”

Solskjaer added: “Loads of players have come here and developed into the top superstars they’ve become.

“It’s always going to be the model here that we develop players because we have the best staff, the best environment, the best supporters.

“But it there’s anything they love it’s players that excite them, players that get them off their seats and we hope to get some of them in.”

James has been given a ringing endorsement by former United winger and legend Ryan Giggs, now the national boss at Wales.
