Verstappen was able to overtake Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel to secure the final podium place in Barcelona.
Mercedes were by far the better team as they secured a fifth one-two in as many races this season.
Hamilton dominated from the first corner while Bottas helped to bring home maximum points.
But as all three drivers were conducting their post-race interviews with Martin Brundle, Verstappen was pre-occupied while stood next to Hamilton’s car.
“Just tell us what you were looking at here,” Brundle said.
“What can you learn when you are looking at your competition this close?”
The question came as Verstappen spent all of the opening question checking out the W10.
“I was just looking to see what’s different to mine,” the Dutchman replied.
Verstappen was named driver of the day as he had to fight off a late Ferrari attack following a safety car.
And he explained how he was able to get a jump on the Italian team.
“It was a hectic first corner and I just backed out of it and actually gave me a good position out of the first three corners,” Verstappen added.
“Of course the Mercedes cars were too quick today but I could do my own pace.
“We were competitive so I’m happy to be on the podium.”
Hamilton’s victory leapfrogs him above Bottas to the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
Verstappen rose to third with his strong drive.
