F1 teams and drivers pay tribute after Anthoine Hubert dies in horrific F2 crash

In a statement, the FIA said: “As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car #19, Anthoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

“The driver of car #12, Juan-Manuel Correa (USA), is in a stable condition and is being treated at the CHU Liège hospital. More information on his condition will be provided when it becomes available.

“The driver of car #20 Giuliano Alesi (FRA) was checked and declared fit at the medical centre.

“The FIA is providing support to the event organisers and the relevant authorities, and has commenced an investigation into the incident.”The race was immediately cancelled after the crash.

Hubert won the GP3 championship in 2018 and joined Renault’s development programme before joining the academy as a full member this year.

He was sat in eighth in the championship having won races in Monaco and France this year, his debut season in F2.

The Mercedes team said in a statement after the FIA’s announcement: “The entire Mercedes family sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Anthoine Hubert, and his Arden and Renault teams on this tragic day.”

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton wrote on Instagram: “This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today.

“If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe your hugely mistaken. All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it is not appreciated enough.

“Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport. Anthoine is a hero as far as I’m concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams. I’m so sad that this has happened. Let’s left him up and remember him. Rest in peace brother.”

Meanwhile, Haas said: “Haas F1 Team sends its deepest condolences to Anthoine Hubert’s family following this evening’s tragic news. Our thoughts go out to them as well as Arden, Renault and the FIA F2 community at this time.”

“Very sad news regarding Anthoine Hubert. Our thoughts are with his family,” said Alfa Romeo Racing.

McLaren wrote: “It is with deep sadness that McLaren Racing learns of the passing of Anthoine Hubert in today’s Formula 2 race. The team sends its heartfelt condolences to Anthoine’s family and loved ones, his colleagues at the Arden team, and the entire F2 community.”

McLaren racer Lando Norris said: “Rest in peace Anthoine.” 

“From everyone at ROKiT Williams Racing, our thoughts and prayers go out to the colleagues, friends and family of Anthoine Hubert following the tragic news in Spa today,” said ROKiT Williams Racing.

Honda Racing technical director Toyoharu Tanabe said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Antoine Hubert. On behalf of the Honda Motor Company, I offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends.” 

Former F1 driver Jenson Button posted on social media: “Devastating news from Spa today, the super talented Anthoine Hubert succumbed to his injuries after an accident in today’s F2 race. rest in peace Champion.” 

Marcus Ericsson, who moved from F1 to IndyCar last year, said: “Awful, terrible news. All my thoughts with his family and friends. Rest in peace.”

“All of us at Pirelli feel so incredibly sad to hear the tragic news about Anthoine Hubert, which has just been made official. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, team, and many friends. @FIA_F2 #F2 #Hubert,” said Pirelli Motorsport.

Sky Sports’ F1 commentator David Croft tweeted: “Thoughts and prayers with the family of Anthoine Hubert this evening, along with his friends and all at Arden and the F2 Paddock after he passed away as a result of his injuries from a crash today. Juan Manuel Correa is stable and being treated in hospital. Heartbreaking news.”

Former driver Felipa Massa, now in Formula E, added: “I’m deeply shocked & saddened by the loss of such a young talent today Antoine Hubert in @FIA_F2. Sending love and strength to his family and friends.”
