President tells police ‘your colleagues fell under the blows of a distorted, deadly Islam which we must eradicate.’
French President Emmanuel Macron promised an “unrelenting fight” against the Islamist “Hydra” as he attended a tribute to the victims of a knife attack at Paris’ police HQ.
At a ceremony at the police base where the attack took place, Macron told officers “we will wage an unrelenting fight in the face of Islamist terrorism,” Le Point reported.
He said it was “inconceivable and unacceptable” that the attacker — Mickael Harpon, a 45-year-old IT staffer in the intelligence-gathering department who had worked for the police since 2003 — had carried out an attack “in the very place where we pursue terrorists and criminals.”
“Your colleagues fell under the blows of a distorted, deadly Islam which we must eradicate,” Macron said, adding that this was not “a fight against a religion but against its diversion that leads to terrorism.”
Harpon killed three police officers and an administrative worker with a knife before being shot dead by another officer. The case has been transferred to counter-terrorism police.
