Rebekah Vardy has likened her public social media row with Coleen Rooney over an Instagram trap to “arguing with a pigeon”.

Rooney, who is married to footballer Wayne Rooney, accused Vardy on Twitter of leaking private Instagram stories about her – posts that disappear after 24 hours on the social media app – to The Sun newspaper.

She claims she had set the privacy settings to ensure the posts were only visible to one account, which belongs to Vardy.

Rooney said she deliberately posted fake updates, including that she was considering gender selection in order to have a baby girl and that she was returning to TV, and that these stories went on to be featured in the press.

Vardy, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie, has denied any wrongdoing and says she has hired a cybersecurity expert to clear her name.

The pregnant 37-year-old confronted Rooney, 33, on the phone about the allegations.

She revealed details of the conversation to the Daily Mail: “I said to her: ‘Coleen, what on earth have you done?’

“It was not an easy phone call. She said to me: ‘I’m not pointing the finger’ and I said: ‘You have just annihilated me in public and hung me out to dry. The whole world hates me!’.

“I thought she was my friend but she completely annihilated me. She said: ‘You know, I always really liked you, which makes it harder.'”

Asked if they argued on the phone, Vardy replied: “That would be like arguing with a pigeon. You can tell it that you are right and it is wrong, but it’s still going to s*** in your hair.”

The row between the two women, who are known in the tabloid press as WAGs (wives and girlfriends of footballers), has sparked worldwide coverage – with headlines appearing in The New York Times and Germany’s Bild newspaper.

Even foreign football clubs AS Roma and Borussia Dortmund have waded into the row posting cheeky retorts to Rooney’s original tweet.

AS Roma tweeted a picture of the club blocking Rebekah Vardy on their Instagram account.

Borussia Dortmund also poked fun, parodying Rooney’s claim by detailing the club’s “burden” of “trying to figure out” how to deal with “so much chit-chat, replies, and comments from fans in a language we don’t really get – all without our permission”.

On Thursday, model Danielle Lloyd claimed to have also had “run-ins” with Vardy.
