Tottenham have been the biggest disappointment of the season, and part of the reason is they have three players desperate to leave.
That’s the verdict of Arsenal icon Charlie Nicholas.
Tottenham currently sit ninth in the Premier League table after a poor start.
With speculation currently surrounding Mauricio Pochettino’s future, Spurs have struggled to keep up with the rest of the top six, and are facing an uphill battle to get Champions League football next season.
They are also in a difficult position regarding their squad, with multiple players expected to leave on a free.
In particular, Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are out of contract at the end of the season, with fans fearing they will walk away rather than sign extensions.
Spurs spent big in the summer transfer window, with Ryan Sessegnong, Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Clark all joining for a combined £102million.
However, results on the pitch haven’t been as impressive as their transfer dealings, and in the last week before the international break they conceded ten goals in two games.
And Nicholas was heavily critical of Spurs, and hinted their problems are down to the three wanting out.
“I would say Tottenham on the whole,” he said, when asked for his biggest disappointment of the season.
“When we look back to the start of the season, we looked at Liverpool and Man City to lead by a distance, but thought Tottenham would be next.
“They spent a lot of money, got the stadium behind them, had a lot of players signing contracts and held on to Mauricio Pochettino too.
