Police are investigating after a crowdfunding webpage was set up to raise funds to kill anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller.
The page, which had been online since April, aimed to raise £10,000 to pay a hitman to kill the businesswoman, the Sunday Mirror reported.
According to the newspaper, it was started by an anonymous account called Jeff Blogger and stated: “We want to raise £10,000 to hire a contract killer to kill Gina Miller. The Traitor of Democracy.”
Ms Miller, 54, successfully took the government to court in 2017 to prevent then prime minister Theresa May triggering the UK’s exit from the EU without first seeking parliamentary approval.
She was also part of legal action against Boris Johnson’s five-week suspension of parliament this year, which was subsequently ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court.
A Met Police officers are “currently investigating a report of threats to kill that was reported to them on Wednesday 23 October”, a spokesman said.
“Enquiries remain ongoing and the victim, a female aged in her 50s, has been regularly updated.”
The GoFundMe campaign did not raise any funds and was not shared on social media.
The crowdfunding website are working with the police in their inquiries.
A GoFundMe spokesperson said: “This campaign has been removed. We are sorry it got through our otherwise robust procedures.
“We are particularly sorry for any distress this caused Gina Miller.”
Ms Miller told the Sunday Mirror: “There is of course no excuse for any individual to resort to inciting murder, but it shows how bad things have got.
“Certain extremist politicians and commentators must take their share of responsibility and recognise that incendiary language – and continually ratcheting up the stakes – has consequences.”
She also added on Twitter: “We need to heal our nation and my view is that the only way of doing that is to remember true British values of tolerance, decency, reason, civic duty, common-sense and above all else honesty and kindness.”
Ms Miller has previously been the subject of threats and online abuse following her high-profile legal action related to Brexit.
