Paul Merson says Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana are like two new signings for Liverpool
Liverpool midfielders Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana are “like two new signings”, according to former Arsenal star Paul Merson.
Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lallana have been plagued with injuries in the last couple of seasons.
The Ox missed the majority of last term with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and Lallana has struggled with a number of different issues.
However, Lallana scored the vital equaliser in Liverpool‘s 1-1 draw with Manchester United last Sunday and Oxlade-Chamberlain netted twice in the 4-1 Champions League win in Genk on Wednesday.
I think for me that will be like two new signings for them
And Merson says that is good news for manager Jurgen Klopp.
“This week Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lallana have come back, scored goals, and I think for me that will be like two new signings for them,” Merson said on Soccer Saturday.
Liverpool host Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday and former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison is not sure if Klopp will choose to start Oxlade-Chamberlain twice in the space of a few days.
“Yeah he definitely gives you something different,” Morrison said of the former Arsenal man.
“Ox was a top player before he got injured and he still is a top player.
“It’s going to take time though, it was a big injury that he had, and he needs game time. It’s so hard to fit him in and get him this game time.
“But in the week he was brilliant. Do you start him again? Is it too early to start him again?
“Obviously trying to build [him] up to get that match fitness and stuff.
“But yeah he personally would want to start because after you’ve scored a couple of goals you’re on a high and you want to go into the next game.
“But I think Oxlade-Chamberlain is a great player. If you get him fully fit and back at it, he can get into that midfield three. I think he’s really good in the three, he can drive forward, score goals and create goals.
“Like Merse said, him and Lallana getting back fit is like having two new signings.
“He’ll be looking to start but it’s a big call from Jurgen Klopp.”
