United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about a move for Fernandes after their 3-0 win against Norwich, with the Norwegian insisting he has the backing of the board.

He said: “Bruno Fernandes? I can’t talk about individuals that play for other clubs, but I’ve got to say I do have the backing.

“We do have the backing to do something if the right thing comes up in this window. The owners and Ed, they know what we’re building towards.”

United fans are hoping they can sign Fernandes before their Premier League clash at Liverpool on Sunday.

However, transfer expert Duncan Castles says Sporting are desperate to keep Fernandes for their clash against Benfica on Friday night.
