Goldie Hawn turned 71 yesterday, celebrating in style over the weekend by spending time with family and friends, meditating a lot, and, naturally, having one hell of a girls’ night out.

Rounding up friends including Chrome Hearts founder Laurie Lynn Stark, and, of course, her doppelgänger daughter, the 37 year-old actress Kate Hudson, Goldie looked amazing as she hit the town at Los Angeles’ new hotspot, Catch, wearing a tie-front slip dress (arms, legs and cleavage out, of course) with statement earrings , smoky eye makeup and a signature blowdry. Mariah Carey even popped over to sing Happy Birthday.
But then, why wouldn’t Goldie celebrate her birthday in this way, posting party pictures on her Instagram page and radiating happiness? She is the champion of eternally great party style, after all.

Goldie first began to experiment with her personal party look in the Sixties, when she made the pixie haircut and babydoll silhouette the staples of her boho teen wardrobe. Her look was often mimicked by her on-screen characters and, as she won an Oscar for her role as Toni in 1969’s Cactus Flower and enjoyed all of the party buzz that came with it, American Vogue hailed her to be one of the decade’s greatest It girls.
In the Seventies, the newly-made movie star hit Studio 54 with the best of them, her wardrobe of floral dresses and slinky halters moving into the party dressing trends of the disco era. She had her first two children and achieved national treasure status with two TV specials performing show tunes in sequins.
It wasn’t until the Eighties, however, that she settled on her cocktailwear signatures; textural black fabrics, metallics, big hair, big jewellery and big personality. She’s honed a truly personal style ethos, an ageless formula with plenty of va va voom.
Many would say that, at 71, there are dresses that you shouldn’t wear, heels that are too young for you, or bars that you shouldn’t really be going to because you should know better by now. But Hawn has lived a lot, laughed a lot and tried a lot of different party outfits over the years – experience that has only made her party style better now than ever before.
So what’s she teaching us? To live life to the fullest and not give a damn what anyone thinks? Yep. To have fun with fashion and ignore all the rules that exist on what is ‘age appropriate’? Certainly. And, perhaps most importantly, whatever your age, there’s always a party worth leaving the house for and you can always find something to wear to it.
