A coordinated attack by the US, UK and France has been expected for several days after an alleged chemical attack on civilians in Syria last weekend.
The West have blamed the Assad regime for the incident but both the Syrian and Russian governments have denied any attack took place.
Journalists who are travelling with Vice President Mike Pence in Peru have been told that Trump’s deputy has made a sudden and unexpected return to his hotel.
No reason has been given for the change of plan.
In the UK, Theresa May’s Chief of Staff, Gavin Barwell, was reportedly been seen leaving No 10 Downing Street as late as 12.45am.
There is speculation he left the Prime minister’s official residence once military plans for Syria were finalised.
Jeff Zeleny, CNN’s Senior White House Correspondent has since tweeted: “President Trump to address the nation shortly from the Diplomatic Reception, speaking about a Syria strike, two US officials say.”
White House Bureau Chief for VOA News, Steve Herman, also tweeted: “At @WhiteHouse the pool reporters have been summoned.”
