This year’s rebranded British Fashion Awards – now known simply as ‘The Fashion Awards’ – will pit supermodel sister against supermodel sister as both Bella and Gigi Hadid are nominated in the International Model of the Year category. The sisters were both standout stars from the recent fashion weeks, where they appeared alongside each other in the Versace, Bottega Veneta, Max Mara and Fendi shows.
They are up against their friend and fellow Instagram-royalty Kendall Jenner, the Dominican Republic model and face of Prada; Lineisy Montero; and British model Adwoa Aboah. The nominees were revealed yesterday by British Fashion Council Chairman, Dame Natalie Massenet and BFC CEO Caroline Rush at Soho House in LA, a move which sets out their ambitions to attract A-list heavyweights to the event.
The intention is to turn the Awards – which is sponsored by Swarovski – into an international showcase, with ambitions to rival the starry, Anna Wintour-run annual Met Gala in aid of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York.

The nominations for British Brand of the year includes Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Erdem and Stella McCartney – all of which have been worn by the Duchess of Cambridge. Kane and Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen are also both nominated for British Womenswear designer of the year.
In a reflection of the fashion industry’s current predilection for sportswear influences, a new award for ‘International Urban Luxury Brand’ has been created, with nominees including Adidas, cult British sportswear brand Palace and Vetements – helmed by the provocative Georgian designer Demna Gvasalia – who is also nominated for International Ready-to-wear designer in his capacity as creative director for Balenciaga.
Another new award, for International Business Leader will pit Adrian Joffe of Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market against Burberry’s Christopher Bailey and Marco Bizzarri of Gucci. On top of these, there will be five additional awards made on the night which will recognise career milestones (lifetime achievements in fashion, so to speak). Dame Natalie Massenet promised that, “this year’s ceremony will be thrilling and I look forward to welcoming all our guests to London and to what has become one of the most-anticipated highlights of the global fashion capital.”
The event will be held in front of 4000 guests on Monday 5th December at the Royal Albert Hall and be hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall.
