England’s Fleetwood in contention at US Open

Fleetwood finished tied for 27th on his only other US Open appearance in 2015

England’s Tommy Fleetwood is two shots off the clubhouse lead held by Rickie Fowler midway through the opening round of the US Open at Erin Hills.

American Fowler had seven birdies and no bogeys in his 65 to record the joint lowest score after round one.

Fleetwood is tied for second with Brian Harman and Brooks Koepka on five under after posting a bogey-free 67.

England’s Lee Westwood is three under, while Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is among the later starters.

McIlroy, the 2011 champion, is returning after a month out with a rib injury.

The world number two plays alongside England’s Justin Rose, who won this tournament in 2013, and 2015 USPGA champion Jason Day of Australia, who finished runner-up to both Rose and McIlroy.

World number one Dustin Johnson started on the 10th and had two bogeys, one double bogey and a birdie in four holes from the 14th. He parred the other 14 holes to start the defence of his US Open title with a three-over 75.

Johnson was playing with Germany’s 2014 winner Martin Kaymer, who finished level par, and 2015 champion Jordan Spieth, who shot one over.

Fellow American Patrick Reed is three off the lead on four under, while South Africa’s Ernie Els dropped his only shots of the day on the par-four 17th and par-five 18th as the 1994 and 97 champion opened with a two-under 70.

England’s Danny Willett, who won the 2016 Masters, birdied the par-three ninth, his last hole, but signed for a nine-over-par 81.

Martin Laird posted a level-par 72, while fellow Scotsman Russell Knox finished one over and Wales’ Bradley Dredge is two over.
