Pippa Middleton’s track record shows a penchant for colourful pieces; very rarely one to step out in head-to-toe black or even monochrome. Today Middleton made the most of the slight raise in temperatures that we’ve witnessed over the last couple of days and demonstrated that winter doesn’t have to herald the absence of colour, by pounding the streets of Chelsea in a burnt orange, collarless number from Zara (this particular style is now sold out, but Jaeger have a similar, albeit more expensive, version).
Middleton paired her punchy coat with a patterned skirt peeking just proud of her orange hem line, opaque tights, ankle boots (Toga do a similar pair) and a black Gucci bag, for a look that appeared relaxed, yet pulled together.
What lessons can we learn from Middleton’s bold cover-up?

Do go collarless
The fact that Middleton’s Zara coat is A-line in shape, collarless and equipped with oversized buttons, grants it a certain 60’s-esque feel, meaning the coat has context and the zingy colour doesn’t look out of place. We suggest layering a black or cream polo neck underneath yours. Not only will this help keep out the cold, but it will also make a bright coat look suitably wintry.
Pair with neutral pieces
Middleton has hit the nail on the head in teaming her zesty coat with neutral items. Her black tights-skirt-bag combo lets her outerwear do the talking, offset slightly by her monochrome skirt. If you’re going to wear a brightly coloured coat, we recommend pairing it with black, cream, navy or grey.
Wear with tights
Middleton’s tights are to similar effect. They add to the over all 50’s feel of the look, while also giving is a cool edge. Wear yours with opaque tights like Middleton, or experiment with patterned or fishnets to rework you coat for evening.
