Someone Used Google Home and Raspberry Pi To Control Their Fireplace

Breaking

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. And since there’s no place to go, let’s curl up by the fireplace and listen to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.” But only after we use the Raspberry Pi to turn everything on.

Yeah, you read that right. Someone has finagled a Raspberry Pi to both turns on a fireplace by way of Google Home and turn on “Let’s Get It On” as well. Reddit user “hovee” is the mastermind behind this plan, and they set up a Google Home unit to understand those commands by connecting a Raspberry Pi to Home Assistant automation software. If you love tech and you love Marvin Gaye, this sounds like the project for you.

If you’re interested in putting something together, good ol’ hovee put together a set of details as to how they accomplished this setup. Unfortunately, there’s not a step-by-step guide to what you need to do to get things set up just the way you like them in time for the holidays.

But you don’t have to use a Google Home only to get everything situated. It works with an iPhone and Apple Watch as well, utilizing Apple’s HomeKit. Of course, the possibilities here are relatively endless. You could set up some gorgeous holiday light setups with holiday music blaring at your command. Or you could surprise someone with a gift this season by way of remote control.

The possibilities of what you could accomplish with this setup seem endless, so if you decide to undertake a similar project or two, make sure you share what you’ve come up with in the comments below. There’s always room for more holiday cheer — or better “mood” songs than Marvin Gaye if you’re into “mood” songs, that is.
