TNT has ordered a pilot for a Snowpiercer TV series, based on Bong Joon-ho’s 2014 film and the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.
The series is being produced by Tomorrow Studios, which is already working with TNT on Good Behavior and a Let the Right One In adaptation.
If you haven’t experienced either (and why haven’t you?), the story takes place on a perpetually moving train where humanity now lives after an environmental catastrophe plunged the world into an Ice Age. The narrative focuses heavily on class, where the disenfranchised, lower-class people at the back of the train are fighting to get to the front, where the wealthy live.

Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton starred in the project, which featured memorable visuals and an absurd science fiction premise that they somehow managed to make work. There are so many post-apocalyptic stories out there, so to showcase and tell one that takes place on a train built with a class hierarchy was risky, but welcome.
“Snowpiercer has one of the most original concepts to hit the screen in the last decade, and it’s one that offers numerous opportunities for deeper exploration in a series format,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. “We look forward to expanding TNT’s relationship with Tomorrow Studios and their take on a world where humanity is pushed to the extreme.”
The two-hour film was critically acclaimed upon release, with a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, although it had a limited release, so it didn’t make a lot of money. One criticism I had of the film was that it felt rushed, especially as our heroes got to the front cars. The graphic novel takes place on a 1,001-car train, so there’s plenty of room to expand on certain cars and lifestyles, along with including more widespread conflicts that occur in the books and the incident that got our characters to this point.
Joon-ho is serving as executive producer on the pilot, along with Park Chan-wook and Lee Tae-hun, who produced the film.
