Man whose claims sparked VIP abuse investigation named

A man accused of perverting the course of justice after making allegations of a VIP abuse ring in Westminster can now be named as Carl Beech.

The 50-year-old, known previously only as “Nick”, will now stand trial at Newcastle Crown Court in May next year over 12 counts of perverting the course of justice and one allegation of fraud.

In 2014 his allegations led the Metropolitan Police to launch Operation Midland, which saw several high-profile individuals interviewed about the claims of murder and the sexual abuse of children.

Scotland Yard eventually closed the £2.5m investigation and none of the VIPs who were spoken to faced any charges.

Mr Beech appeared via video link at Newcastle Crown Court, where Judge Paul Sloan QC lifted the reporting restriction ahead of the trial for perverting the course of justice.

At a hearing last month, Beech’s barrister Raymond Tully said: “We anticipate that the matter will be fully contested.”
