Argentina FURIOUS with UK over upcoming military drills in ‘illegally occupied’ Falklands

Latest news

The exercises are scheduled to take place from October 15-29 and will involve the use of missile launchers, angering the Argentine government.

In the government’s complaint, they say: “Argentina rejects the holding of these exercises in Argentine territory illegally occupied by the United Kingdom.”

A similar protest was made two years ago despite Britain arguing the exercises are routine.

The Falkland Islands are a disputed area that Argentina says that they have claim to after they gain independence from Spain during the 19th century.

Last August, Argentina staged one of its largest military exercises in recent years.

The exercise involved troops as well as helicopters and armoured mortar carriers.

Mark Pollard is a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands and he explained that they are facing a constant threat from neighbouring Argentina.

He said: “I think we always have this threat from Argentina that leans over our head continuously.

“But we are very very pleased with the reassurance we get from the Ministry of Defence.

“We have a military base in the Falkland Islands and it is very capable of defending the island.

“We are concerned about some Argentine rhetoric, but we are happy that things are in place to defend us against them.

“I don’t think we will see another invasion in anytime in my life.”

The UK continues to refuse to negotiate with Argentina over the status of the Falklands, arguing the people living there voted to remain part of the UK in 2013.

During the referendum vote, there was an overwhelming support for the Islands to remain part of the UK.

Out of the 1,518 votes cast, 1,513 voted to remain.

One ballot was rejected and another was unaccounted for.

Argentina dismissed the vote as Britain trying to make an excuse to continue having a claim to the disputed islands.
