MLB: Detroit Tigers’ Victor Martinez records 2,000th hit against old team
Victor Martinez recorded his 2,000th major league hit in the same city where he picked up his first.
The Detroit Tigers‘ designated hitter ripped a two-out single off Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco in the second inning of Friday’s game in Cleveland, where he signed as a teenager out of Venezuela.
Martinez, who played with the Indians in parts of eight seasons from 2002-09, immediately hugged first-base coach Omar Vizquel upon reaching first base. He then received a standing ovation from the crowd at Progressive Field, leading the 38-year-old to tip his cap.
The game was briefly halted to acknowledge the milestone.
