Oakland Athletics set Coliseum attendance record

Latest news

OAKLAND — After a pregame ceremony honoring the Oakland Athletics’ 1989 World Series team, it took a few innings for the Oakland Coliseum to fill in for Saturday’s Bay Bridge Series game between the A’s and the visiting San Francisco Giants. When it did, though, it was record-setting.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the A’s announced an attendance of 56,310 — eking out a Coliseum baseball attendance record over the previous mark — 55,989 on June 26, 2004, also against the Giants.

The crowd is the largest to attend a Bay Area baseball game since Sept. 30, 1999, the final game at Candlestick Park.

The game also set a record for the largest attendance at a Major League Baseball game this season. That mark was held by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who hosted the Cubs on June 26 this year, in front of 53,904 at Dodger Stadium.

The record-setting sell-out follows the A’s first sellout of the 2018 season on Friday night, at 45,606. That crowd was the largest paid attendance for an A’s game at the Coliseum since 47,385 on Aug. 13, 2005 against Minnesota Twins. The club’s record for attendance during a three-game series is 158,152 from June 25-27, 2004 against the Giants. With Mount Davis’s nearly 9,000 seats open for only Saturday, it’s unlikely that the series mark is in danger.
