Skepta claims he turned down an MBE in a lyric on his new song Hypocrisy

Skepta has revealed that he turned down an MBE in a line on his latest track.

The London grime MC made the claim in his new song, called Hypocrisy, which he released at the weekend.

An MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) is awarded to those who make substantial contributions to arts and science or who work with charities outside the civil service.

They’re handed out in the Queen’s birthday honours.

The Cabinet Office, which issues the list, has told Newsbeat that it doesn’t comment on who’s turned down official honours.

In the second verse of Hypocrisy, the grime artists mentions the MBE.

The lyrics say: “Just came back from the Ivors/And look at what we collected.

“The MBE got rejected/I’m not trying to be accepted.”

Skepta won the Mercury Prize for his fourth album Konnichiwa.

The album, released last year, was supported by four singles including the top 40 entries That’s Not Me, Shutdown and Man.

It was also listed as one of the best albums of 2016 by many publications, including NME, the Guardian and Apple Music.

Skepta got three Brit Award nominations this year for British male solo artist, British breakthrough act and British album of the year.
